In this tour, you will discover the vast plains of the area popularly known as the ‘White Field‘ and home to one of the largest concentrations of steppe species in Portugal.
We offer daily tours to the Castro Verde plains which is famous for Great Bustards, Rollers and Rufous Bush Robins. The many other classic steppe species we encounter on this trip include Little Bustards, Griffon Vultures, Black Vultures, Spanish Imperial Eagles, Golden Eagles, Black-bellied Sandgrouse and Thekla Larks.
These tours are organized for small groups and can be done at any time of the year.

This is the largest flat and open area in Portugal, with beautiful colourful fields in the spring and many birds and for that reason, it requires a visit. Many species of birds are possible to see in this white field. Especially steppe birds such as larks, sandgrouses, great and little bustards and even raptors.
We’ll meet at 8 a.m. at your hotel or another place previously defined. After that, we will drive about one hour and a half until reaching the target area.
We will spend the entire day driving and walking in this vast area searching for interesting birds.
After this big day bird watching in this beautiful area, it’s time to go back and rest.
Despite cloudy weather -which turned to rain after lunch and brought proceedings to a halt- we had a productive day with Jorge, seeing over 40 species of birds in the Castro Verde area. Highlights included great bustards, little bustards ( a group of 19 close to us on the ground and in flight, a pair of little owls, a good flock of calendra larks, and a splendid long-eared owl spending the winter in suburban Castro Verde. Throughout we were very well looked after and guided by Jorge whose skill and knowledge allowed us to make the most of a fairly short visit.
