Last May saw an incredible arrival of Red-footed Falcons into Portugal.
A migratory species, it breeds in Eastern Europe before spending the winter in Southern Africa.
Rarely recorded in Portugal, with most sightings being in the south during autumn migration, this spring saw unprecedented numbers appear in the country with many adults and immature birds of both sexes being seen.
On May 14th near the town of Baleizão, near Beja in the Alentejo, I was lucky enough to find 21 individuals – the largest number of birds seen together in Portugal.
I share my observations in eBird – https://ebird.org/checklist/S23451193
Here are a selection of photos taken on that incredible day.
